MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Friday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County had indicted two teens for the murder of a 79-year-old man who was found shot to death outside his south Memphis home last September.
The Grand Jury indicted Alvin Gordon, 18, and Devaron Taylor, 18, each for first degree murder during the perpetration of aggravated burglary, first degree murder during the perpetration of attempted especially aggravated robbery, attempted especially aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.
According to the affidavit of complaint filed in this case, on September 25, 2007, the victim, Maurice Pegues, was found dead outside his home in the 2100 block of Goff. His death was ruled a homicide due to gunshot wounds to the abdomen.
An investigation led to the arrests of Gordon and Taylor, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident. A juvenile court judge transferred Taylor to criminal court to be tried as an adult.
Gordon is being held on a $5 million bond; Taylor is being held without bond.
Adults charged with first degree murder face a punishment of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 51 years, life in prison without parole, or death. Juveniles charged with first degree murder face life in prison with the possibility of parole after 51 years, life in prison without parole. Attempted especially aggravated robbery is a class B felony, which carries a standard sentence of 8-12 years in prison. Aggravated burglary is a class B felony, which carries a standard sentence of 3-6 years in prison.
First degree murder is covered by the D.A.’s “No Deals” policy on violent crimes. Exceptions to the policy are made for legal or ethical reasons. |
