MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Monday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County had indicted a former Memphis police officer for allegedly stealing more than $10,000 from a church.

The Grand Jury indicted Timothy Steele, 39, for theft of property over $10,000.

According to the indictment the theft of money occurred between January 1 and August 5, 2007. The indictment claims that Steele obtained a sum of $10,000 or more but less than $60,000 from Barron Heights Missionary Baptist Church without the church’s consent. The church is located at 1078 Haynes Street.

Steele was taken into custody on Friday, February 22. He has been released from the Shelby County Jail on $5,000 bond. An arraignment date has not been set. Steele resigned from the Memphis Police Department on November 15, 2007. He had been an officer since 1997.

The Memphis Police Department’s Inspectional Services Bureau investigated this case.

Theft of property over $10,000 is a class C felony, which carries a standard sentence of 3-6 years in prison.
