Millington Man Convicted for Killing His Own Mother
MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Friday that a jury convicted a Millington man for killing his own elderly, disabled mother at her home in July 2006.
The jury found John Brunner, 56, guilty of second degree murder and domestic assault. Judge Chris Craft is scheduled to sentence Brunner on May 12. Brunner faces 15 to 25 years in prison.
Brunner admitted in court to beating Opal Brunner, 82, with her own cane, then strangling her. The incident happened on the evening of July 23, 2006 in the backyard of the victim’s home, located on Commander Road in Millington.
Brunner had been indicted for first degree murder, which is a charge covered by the D.A.’s “No Deals” policy on violent crimes. Exceptions are made to the policy for legal and ethical reasons.
Assistant District Attorneys Karen Cook and Robert Ratton prosecuted this case, both of whom are assigned to the D.A.’s Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit. |
