Jury Convicts Memphis Man for Killing Neighbor
Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Friday that a jury convicted a Memphis man for shooting and killing his neighbor following a verbal argument in October 2006.

The jury found Jerry Tate, 24, guilty of second degree murder. Tate faces 15 to 25 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 17.

According to a witness, on October 19, 2006, the victim, Walter Ray Nelson, left his home on North Parkway and was walking down North Dunlap when Tate came out of his home and the two started arguing. The witness said he calmed the situation and he and Nelson left the scene. On the following day, as Nelson was again walking down North Dunlap, Tate came outside and called him. When Nelson kept walking, Tate pulled out a .38 caliber handgun and shot the victim. According to the medical examiner, Nelson suffered one gunshot to the chest and two to the buttocks area.

Second degree murder is a charge covered by the D.A.’s “No Deals” policy on violent crimes. Exceptions are made to the policy for legal and ethical reasons.

Assistant District Attorneys Corliss Shaw and Muriel Malone prosecuted this case.
