Grand Jury Indicts Memphis Man On First Degree Murder Charge

Memphis, TN – The Shelby County Grand Jury today indicted 19-year-old Joseph Banks on the charge of first degree murder for the June 25, 2002 shooting death of 29-year-old Shalawn Lane.

The incident took place on South Pauline near Vance Avenue. The victim was shot in the back of the head. He was transported to The Med where he died a few hours later.

Memphis Police officers arrested Banks at the scene of the shooting. He remains in custody at the Shelby County Jail.

This case is being prosecuted by Jennifer Nichols, director of the District Attorney’s Office Anti-Gang Unit.

Tennessee law states a person convicted of first degree murder shall be punished by death, imprisonment for life, or imprisonment for life with possibility of parole. The first degree murder charge is covered by the District Attorney’s “No Deals” policy on violent crimes.
