Cordova Couple Indicted For The Death Of Their Infant Son

MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Friday that a Cordova couple whose infant son died inside a hot van outside the family’s home last September has been indicted by the state Grand Jury for Shelby County on criminal charges.

The Grand Jury indicted Gerald and Julie Janowski, both 35, each on one count of criminally negligent homicide for the death of 5-month-old Caleb Janowski. Paramedics were called on the afternoon of September 10, 2005 to the family’s home at Glen Arbor Circle. They transported Caleb Janowski to Baptist Memorial Hospital East where he was pronounced dead. The Shelby County Medical Examiner ruled the victim died of hyperthermia as a result of being left in a vehicle.

“When a child loses his or her life as a result of being negligently or recklessly left in a vehicle during hot weather, we must do what we can to hold those responsible accountable,” said Gibbons.

Gerald and Julie Janowski were taken into custody on Friday.  Each received a $250 bond.

Criminally negligent homicide is a class E felony, which, if convicted, carries a standard sentence of one to two years.

An arraignment date has not yet been scheduled.
