MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Wednesday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County had indicted a 20-year-old Memphis man for the murder of a man found dead last October inside his home with his throat slashed.
The Grand Jury indicted Andre Perkins for first degree murder during the perpetration of a felony and theft of property over $1,000.
The victim, Willie Bailey, 59, was found dead on October 16, 2005 inside his home on Summer Creek. The Shelby County Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide. Police called to the scene also discovered Bailey’s vehicle was missing.
Memphis homicide detectives charged Perkins on October 21, 2005. According to the affidavit of complaint filed in this case, Perkins was driving the victim’s vehicle at the time of his arrest. He is being held at the Shelby County Jail without bond.
Tennessee law states a person convicted of first degree murder shall be punished by death, imprisonment for life, or imprisonment for life with possibility of parole. It is a charge covered by the District Attorney’s “No Deals” policy on violent crimes.
Theft of property over $1,000 is a Class D felony, which carries a standard sentence of two to four in prison.
