Former Deputy Jailer Indicted for First Degree Murder

MEMPHIS, TN - Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Friday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County has indicted a former Shelby County deputy jailer accused of killing a Memphis Police Officer.

The Grand Jury indicted Monique Johnson, 39, for first degree murder. Johnson is charged with killing Officer Tony Hayes, shooting him several times. Hayes' family had reported him missing on September 4, 2006.  The officer's body was found days later inside the trunk of his car parked at the Lynnfield Place Apartments. According to the indictment, the incident occurred between September 3 and September 8, 2006.

Johnson was arrested on September 9, 2006. She is being held at the Shelby County Jail on a $1 million bond.  Johnson resigned as a deputy jailer the week after her arrest.

Tennessee law states a person convicted of first degree murder shall be punished by death, imprisonment for life, or imprisonment for life with possibility of parole.

First degree murder is a charge covered by the District Attorney's "No Deals" policy on violent crimes.

Assistant District Attorney Karen Cook is prosecuting this case. Cook is the chief prosecutor of the D.A.'s Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit.
