MEMPHIS, TN - Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Monday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County has indicted a Memphis orthopedic surgeon on numerous sexual assault charges.
The Grand Jury last Thursday indicted Dr. Bret Sokoloff of Germantown for seven counts of sexual battery and two counts of attempted rape. According to the indictments, the alleged incidents occurred between June 2005 and February 2007. According to the indictments, most of the alleged incidents happened in or around 225 South Pauline. Because of the nature of the alleged crimes, the victims' names will not be released.
Dr. Sokoloff turned himself into the Shelby County Jail on April 29. He is being held without bond. A bond arraignment is set for May 1 in Criminal Court Division 3. Indictments are not made public until the defendant is in custody on the charges.
According to a Motion to Set Bail filed in this case, Dr. Sokoloff is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and has been a practicing medical doctor since 1996. According to the motion, he owns a partnership interest in Memphis Orthopedic Group.
Sexual battery is a Class E felony, which carries a standard sentence of 1-2 years in prison. Attempted rape is a Class C felony, which carries a standard sentence of 3-6 years.
This case was investigated by the Memphis Police Department Sex Crimes Unit.
