District Attorney Asks TBI to Investigate Memphis Police Brutality Allegations
MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Friday that he had asked the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) to conduct an official investigation into the allegations that three Memphis police officers used excessive force against five individuals during an incident in late May outside a south Memphis business.
District Attorney Gibbons sent the request to TBI Director Mark Gwyn on Friday, requesting the director assign one or more agents to assist in the investigation of whether Michael McCord, Billy Gray, and Steven Grigsby violated any state laws when they arrested five individuals on May 30th outside “Nappi by Nature” located at 1391 Elvis Presley Boulevard.
Meanwhile, the criminal court cases against Jmalo White, Todario Harris, Sefu Uhuru, Azabash Uhuru, and Denice Marion, were reset until October 5, 2007. The D.A.’s Office requested the cases be continued while the allegations against the police officers are investigated.
“We have been presented with very different versions of what occurred,” Gibbons stated. “The matter needs to be investigated more before any final decisions are made regarding the officers or the individuals charged. I think the TBI is the appropriate investigative agency,” he added.
When the TBI investigation is completed, the District Attorney’s Office will review all of the information and evidence and make a determination how to proceed with this matter.
