Jury Convicts Memphis Man for First Degree Murder in Deadly Carjacking
MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Friday afternoon that a jury convicted a Memphis man for first degree murder for shooting and killing the victim of a 2004 carjacking on Shelby Drive.

The jury found Jeremy Garrett, 29, guilty as indicted for first degree murder in the perpetration of a felony and especially aggravated robbery. Garrett was sentenced to life in prison for the murder and is scheduled to be sentenced on September 14 in Criminal Court Division 2 for the robbery.

Garrett shot Dexter Burge on March 29, 2004 after robbing the victim of his car in a store parking lot at 7110 East Shelby Drive. The victim was taken to The Med after the carjacking where he died from his injuries.

Both charges—first degree murder and especially aggravated robbery—are covered under the D.A.’s “No Deals” policy on violent crimes. Exceptions are made to policy for legal or ethical reasons.

Assistant District Attorneys James Wax and Paul Hagerman prosecuted this case.
