MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Tuesday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County had indicted a former employee of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office on sexual assault charges.
The Grand Jury indicted Wayne Logan, 60, for rape of a child and rape. The Grand Jury also indicted a co-defendant in this case, Sharon Crawford, 27, for facilitation of rape of a child and facilitation of rape.
According to the indictment, the rape of a child occurred between January 1, 2005 and January 8, 2007 and the rape occurred between January 1, 2005 and October 2006. The affidavit of complaint filed in this case states that Logan sexually assaulted an 8-year-old female victim several times, most recently on January 1, 2007, and that Crawford was present when the assaults occurred.
Logan resigned from the Shelby County Sheriff’s office as a civilian employee last January.
Memphis police arrested both Logan and Crawford in January. Logan is currently in the Shelby County Jail on $150,000 bond. Crawford is being held at Jail East on $50,000 bond.
Rape of a child is a Class A felony, which carries a standard sentence standard sentence of 15 to 25 years in prison. Rape is a Class B felony, which carries a standard sentence of 8 to 12 years. Someone convicted on the charge of rape of a child or rape is not eligible for parole. Facilitation to commit rape of a child is a Class B felony. Facilitation to commit rape is a Class C felony, which carries a standard sentence of 3 to 6 years in prison.
Assistant District Attorneys Bobby Carter and Marianne Bell are prosecuting this case. Both are assigned to the Child Protection Investigative Team housed at the Memphis Child Advocacy Center.
