MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Wednesday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County had returned a criminal indictment against a Memphis police officer in connection with a November 2006 incident in which a woman was struck by a squad car and killed.
The Grand Jury indicted Patrolman William Gray, 35, for reckless vehicular homicide, a class C felony.
On November 6, 2006, a pedestrian, Mary Durant, was killed after being struck by a Memphis police vehicle driven by Gray near the intersection of Chelsea Avenue and Pearce Street.
Officer Gray turned himself into the Shelby County Jail on Monday, September 24. The Grand Jury returned the indictment against Gray on September 13, however it is against the law in Tennessee to announce or confirm that someone has been indicted until that person is in custody. Gray has been released from jail on $3,000 bond. An arraignment date has not been set.
The Memphis Police Department says that Gray has been relieved of duty with pay.
The standard sentence for a C felony, if convicted, is three to six years in prison.
This case was investigated and presented to the Grand Jury by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. |
