MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Thursday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County had indicted a Memphis man for the murder of his wife last Thanksgiving at their Cordova home.
The Grand Jury indicted Jeffrey Scott, 30, for first degree murder.
According to the affidavit of complaint filed in this case, on November 23, 2006 paramedics responded to a call at 590 Wesley Woods from where the victim, Ashley Scott, was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital in extremely critical condition. Later that evening, Ashley Scott was pronounced dead. The Shelby County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.
The victim was a teacher at Bolton High School.
Memphis police homicide detectives charged Jeffrey Scott with first degree murder on November 24. The defendant is out of jail on $250,000 bond.
First degree murder is punishable by life in prison with the possibility of parole after 51 years, life in prison without parole, or death. First degree murder is a charge covered by the D.A.’s “No Deals” policy on violent crimes. Exceptions to the policy are made for legal or ethical reasons.
Assistant District Attorneys Karen Cook and Missy Branham are prosecuting this case. Both prosecutors are assigned to the D.A.’s Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit. |
