Grand Jury Indicts Cordova Man for Deadly Parking Lot Shooting
MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Thursday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County returned an indictment against a man who police say shot and killed another man earlier this year in the parking lot of a Cordova shopping center.

The Grand Jury indicted Harry Coleman, 59, for second degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, employing a firearm during the commission of a felony, and assault. According to the affidavit of complaint filed in this case, Coleman and the victim, Robert Schwerin, 52, got into an altercation in the parking lot of the Trinity Commons shopping center, located at 714 North Germantown Parkway. The affidavit says Coleman went to his vehicle and retrieved a handgun, then walked back to where Schwerin was standing and shot the victim in the torso. Memphis police arrested Coleman on the scene. Schwerin died from the gunshot wound and the medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide.

Coleman is out of jail on a $500,000 bond. An arraignment date has not yet been scheduled.

Second degree murder is a charge covered by the D.A.’s “No Deals” policy on violent crimes. Exceptions are made to the policy for legal or ethical reasons. Second degree murder is a class A felony, for which the standard sentence is 15-25 years in prison. Aggravated assault and employing a firearm during a felony is a class C felony, for which the standard sentence is 3-6 years. Assault is a class A misdemeanor, for which the maximum sentence is 11 months, 29 days.

Assistant District Attorney Paul Hagerman is prosecuting this case.
