Man Charged With Killing Friend in Westwood Area

MEMPHIS – A 53-year-old man was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder charges in the shooting death last year of a friend, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Melvin J. Smith of the 3000 block of Swanbrook in the Westwood area of southwest Memphis is being held in the death of Christopher D. Fields.
Fields, 31, died around 5 p.m. on Aug. 11 last year after Smith shot him multiple times during an argument in the backyard of a residence at 13 W. Shelby Drive, investigators said.Fields was arrested by police a short time later.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Nicole Germain of the DA’s Domestic Violence/Intimate Partner Prosecution Unit which handles felony cases of domestic assault and homicide committed by intimate partners.
The unit also works closely with the Shelby County Family Safety Center to provide assistance to domestic violence victims and their families.
