MEMPHIS – March 10, 2017 - A 61-year-old Texas man travelling through Shelby County was arrested this week on drug charges after officers found five kilograms of cocaine hidden in his vehicle, said Tim Helldorfer, director of the West Tennessee Judicial Violent Crime & Drug Task Force.
Jose Angel Sanchez of Houston was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver. He is being held on $350,000 bond.
Sanchez was stopped Tuesday on traffic charges by Task Force Agent Brent Hill on Interstate 40 eastbound near Airline Road.
After Sanchez gave conflicting accounts of his travel itinerary, a narcotics dog was deployed and alerted on Sanchez’s 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. Agents discovered the five kilos of cocaine – 13.5 pounds including packaging - hidden in the truck’s headliner. Sanchez said he was delivering the cocaine to Nashville.
