Motorist Indicted in DUI Crash that Killed Bicyclist

April 11, 2018 – The driver of a car that struck and killed a bicyclist last year in southwest Memphis was indicted Tuesday on alcohol-related aggravated vehicular homicide charges, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
A grand jury indicted Melvin Willies, 63, in connection with the death of Kenya Matthews, 34, who was riding a bicycle on Weaver Road near Raines Road when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Willies at around 10:30 p.m. on June 15 last year.
Willies is free on bond.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Jen Morris of the DA’s DUI Prosecution Task Force whose members work with local law enforcement seeking to reduce the number of DUI-related fatalities and injuries.
Task Force prosecutors also conduct training sessions to update law enforcement officers on changes in traffic and DUI laws.
