Nov. 16, 2018 – A southeast Memphis teen was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder charges for allegedly shooting acquaintance with own gun, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Jaylen Jones, 19, is being held on a bond of $150,000. He also was indicted on charges of first-degree felony murder and especially aggravated robbery.
Sheriff’s investigators said the victim, Lazarus Wright, 17, was shot twice shortly before 4 p.m. on Dec. 3, 2017, in front of a residence in the 7700 block of Parkmont Drive near East Shelby Drive and Hacks Cross Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told investigators that Jones took a pistol from Wright, began pointing it at the victim and then shot him in the leg and the shoulder. Jones was arrested later at his mother’s residence on Neely Road.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Tracye Jones, Division Leader of Criminal Court Division 9.
