Teen Indicted in Dice Game Shooting Death

Coleman Coleman
Dec. 4, 2018 – An Oakhaven-area teen was indicted Tuesday on first-degree murder charges for allegedly killing another player in a dice game this summer when the suspect began losing money, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Diedrich Coleman, 18, also was indicted on a charge of theft of property under $1,000 in the February theft of an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle that was stolen from a vehicle. Coleman is being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $1 million bond.
Police said 30-year-old Rico Ross was shot and killed on June 27, 2018, in the 3400 block of Piney Woods Ave. near Tchulahoma and E. Shelby Drive where he was playing dice with a group of other men.
When Coleman began losing money, he angrily left the game, but returned with an AR-15 rifle and began firing at Ross as the others ran for safety. Ross was struck several times and died later at a hospital.
The case is being handled by Chief Homicide Advisor Jennifer Nichols.
