Murder Indictment for Mother in Baby’s Death

Feb. 20, 2019 – The mother of a 2-year-old boy was indicted Thursday on first-degree felony murder charges involving the child’s death from multiple internal and external injuries last year, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Davida Wooden, 26, of the 3400 block of Southern, is being held in the Shelby County Women’s Jail East.
A grand jury indicted her on charges of first-degree murder in the perpetration of aggravated child abuse, first-degree murder in the perpetration of aggravated child neglect, aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect.
Paramedics were called to Wooden’s apartment on May 10, 2018, where she told them her son, Jaylen Dodson, was non-responsive when she tried to wake him. The boy was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide due to multiple blunt force injuries.
The victim’s injuries included a lacerated liver, lacerated spleen, multiple bruises to the arm, back, neck and head, and blunt force trauma to the brain. Nearly half of the child’s total blood volume was found in his abdomen.
The case is being handled by Eric Christensen, chief prosecutor of the DA’s Special Victims Unit which prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims; rape and aggravated rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
