Man Indicted in Girlfriend’s Shooting Death

March 29, 2019 – A Whitehaven man has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder in the shooting death last year of his girlfriend, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Derearick Fisher, 37, is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $2 million bond.
At around 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 28, 2018, police were called to a home in the 1700 block of Graceland Cove near Millbranch where they found the victim, Demiryaul Mays, 25, dead from a gunshot wound to the back of her head.
Fisher initially told police she committed suicide, but then said the gun accidentally discharged as they struggled during an argument.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Meghan Fowler of the DA’s Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit which handles felony cases of domestic assault and homicide committed by intimate partners.
The Unit also works closely with the Shelby County Family Safety Center to provide services and assistance to victims and their families.
