Communications and Public Affairs Assistant
Position Summary:
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office is looking for a Public Affairs Assistant to support the Director of Communications and Public Affairs in carrying out the office’s strategic communications plan. This is an ideal role for an individual with a background in communications and an interest in government relations.
This position reports directly to the Director of Communications and Public Affairs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the office’s social media strategy—updating all social sites frequently and tracking analytics
Shoot and edit video content for the office’s YouTube channel
Support with all photography requests
Update website as needed
Monitor and research relevant political issues
Works with Director of Communications to plans and implement strategies to maximize outreach.
Manage the office’s general and media email accounts
Work with Director of Communications and Public Affairs to disseminate information to the public through several sources, including but not limited to local/national papers, local/national television, local/national radio, SCDAG social media and SCDAG website.
Monitor local and national news –including but not limited to, papers, broadcast news, social media etc. for issues relative to the work of SCDAG’s office and the criminal justice system
Direct communications from the public/media to the appropriate department/agency
Assist the Communications Director in all areas as needed, including brainstorming new ideas, proofreading materials, scheduling the release of communications to ensure maximum effectiveness, and maintaining calendars and appointments
Works on special projects as needed
Must be available for on-call responsibilities and needs of the office
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications/English, Marketing, Journalism or Political Science, and two (2) years of administrative experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Required Skills and Abilities:
In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective participants (Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Flickr, etc.) and how they can be deployed.
Exceptional copywriting skills
Experience with at least one video editing software (iMovie, Adobe Premiere, or Final Cut Pro)
Exceptional research skills
Proficiency in Canva; Photoshop experience preferred but not required
Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format
Ability to interact with officials, employees and the public with courtesy and tact
