Communications and Public Affairs Assistant

Position Summary:

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office is looking for a Public Affairs Assistant to support the Director of Communications and Public Affairs in carrying out the office’s strategic communications plan. This is an ideal role for an individual with a background in communications and an interest in government relations. 

This position reports directly to the Director of Communications and Public Affairs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the office’s social media strategy—updating all social sites frequently and tracking analytics

  • Shoot and edit video content for the office’s YouTube channel

  • Support with all photography requests

  • Update website as needed

  • Monitor and research relevant political issues

  • Works with Director of Communications to plans and implement strategies to maximize outreach.

  • Manage the office’s general and media email accounts

  • Work with Director of Communications and Public Affairs to disseminate information to the public through several sources, including but not limited to local/national papers, local/national television, local/national radio, SCDAG social media and SCDAG website.

  • Monitor local and national news –including but not limited to, papers, broadcast news, social media etc.  for issues relative to the work of SCDAG’s office and the criminal justice system

  • Direct communications from the public/media to the appropriate department/agency

  • Assist the Communications Director in all areas as needed, including brainstorming new ideas, proofreading materials, scheduling the release of communications to ensure maximum effectiveness, and maintaining calendars and appointments

  • Works on special projects as needed

  • Must be available for on-call responsibilities and needs of the office

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications/English, Marketing, Journalism or Political Science, and two (2) years of administrative experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective participants (Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Flickr, etc.) and how they can be deployed.

  • Exceptional copywriting skills

  • Experience with at least one video editing software (iMovie, Adobe Premiere, or Final Cut Pro)

  • Exceptional research skills

  • Proficiency in Canva; Photoshop experience preferred but not required

  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format

  • Ability to interact with officials, employees and the public with courtesy and tact
