Today, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office officially filed a writ of certiorari, an emergency appeal, in response to Shelby County General Sessions Judge Bill Anderson's decision earlier this week to release a defendant on their own recognizance. The office promptly began preparing the appeal on the same day the judge issued the decision, culminating in today’s filing.
On November 16, a Shelby County jury convicted Jose Murillo-Salgado on multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder by premeditation, two counts of first-degree murder in the perpetration of a felony, and especially aggravated burglary.

Today, Joshua Dotson was sentenced to 102 years in prison for the murders of his former girlfriend, Jamesha Covson, and her unborn child. Dotson received two consecutive 51-year sentences — one for each life taken — ensuring he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
“I want us today to acknowledge and celebrate the life of Liza Fletcher, a beloved daughter, wife, mother and teacher who was tragically kidnapped and murdered in a senseless act of random predatory violence. Shelby County, TN—District Attorney Mulroy issued a statement following the tragic shooting of Ellie Young, a medical student fatally shot at a cancer walk in Memphis at Shelby Farms on October 19. Her ex-boyfriend, the alleged shooter, was apprehended after fleeing the scene in his car, leading to a police pursuit that concluded with his arrest.
A Shelby County jury has found Travis Cohens guilty of First-Degree Murder in the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend, Teonka Gunn, and the attempted murder of her cousin. The conviction follows a four-day trial where the jury also found Cohen guilty of attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
