DA Mulroy Issues Statement on Ellie Young After Fatal Shooting at Shelby Farms

Shelby County, TN—DA Mulroy issued a statement following the tragic shooting of Ellie Young, a medical student fatally shot at a cancer walk in Memphis at Shelby Farms on October 19. Her ex-boyfriend, the alleged shooter, was apprehended after fleeing the scene in his car, leading to a police pursuit that concluded with his arrest.

“The murder of Ellie Young at Shelby Farms Park is a heartbreaking tragedy, and my deepest condolences go out to her family and friends,” said DA Mulroy. “Due to the severity of this case, our office has requested that no bond be granted pending a hearing. Every homicide in our community is a devastating loss, and every victim deserves justice. Miss Young’s case underscores the critical need to address the widespread issue of domestic and intimate partner violence. Recently, our office recognized Domestic Violence Awareness Month by spotlighting our Domestic Violence Unit, which manages thousands of cases each year, and by providing resources for individuals who may be experiencing abuse.”

Our DV Unit has handled over 4,100 cases so far this year, including nine homicides, and secured 11 guilty verdicts out of 12 trials. This small, dedicated team of prosecutors, investigators, and victim witness coordinators not only seeks justice for victims but also works with partnering organizations to provide resources and support for those experiencing intimate partner violence.

If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, support is available. In Shelby County, the Family Safety Center operates a 24-hour domestic violence hotline for assistance at (901) 222-4400.
