Domestic Shooting Leads to Indictment

Nov. 24, 2021 – A 28-year-old woman was indicted Tuesday in the shooting death earlier this year of a Parkway Village woman with whom she had argued on social media, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

The grand jury indicted Jasmine Mathes, 28, on counts of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted second-degree murder, and employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony.

She is being held on $500,000 bond.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Feb. 1 this year outside the home of victim Jamaya Auguster, 23, in the 3900 block of Watson St.  Investigators said Mathes drove up to the residence where Auguster was in another vehicle with two other women.

One of those women said Mathes was her ex-girlfriend, prompting Auguster to get out the car and approach Mathes, who began firing a handgun. Auguster was struck in the shoulder and the neck, and died a short time later at a hospital.

Mathes also fired shots at the women in the other vehicle as she drove away.

She was charged and arrested two days later.

The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Michael Haas of the District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Unit which prosecutes cases involving domestic assault and homicide committed by intimate partners.
