Man Indicted in Death of Auto Parts Employee

March 4, 2022 – A Raleigh man has been indicted on murder and other felony counts stemming from a shooting last summer near an auto parts store that ended with him shooting himself in the foot and leaving his cell phone behind, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A grand jury indicted Jamarius D. Jones, 28, on first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and four counts of employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. He is being held without bond.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Sept. 13, 2021, police were called to the 5000 block of Yale Road at Covington Pike where Darryl Jenkins, 34, was found shot to death in the parking lot of the auto parts store where he worked.

Also, couple driving in the area with their small child told police their car was struck by several gunshots around the time they saw a man, later identified as Jones, shooting at Jenkins who was taking out the trash.

Police said Jones had a pistol in each hand during the incident and that he accidentally shot himself in the foot. He then began walking away from the scene, firing several more shots, and accidentally dropping his cell phone which was recovered by crime scene investigators.

Jones was charged and arrested two days later.

The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Forrest Edwards of the District Attorney’s Vertical Team 3 which prosecutes cases in General Sessions Division 11 and in Criminal Court Division 3.
