Motorist Indicted in Crash That Killed Former Shelby County Medical Examiner
March 29, 2022 – A motorist involved in a fatal crash last year that killed former Shelby County Medical Examiner Dr. Karen Chancellor has been indicted on counts of vehicular homicide and drunken driving, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Courtney T. Kincaid, 41, of Memphis, is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $100,000 bond.
Investigators said the crash occurred around 10 a.m. on Sept. 10, 2021, on Sam Cooper Boulevard near Mendenhall when Kincaid was driving a pickup truck pulling a trailer with lawn equipment.
Witnesses said Kincaid was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when he lost control, crossed the median, went airborne and landed on top of Dr. Chancellor’s SUV which was westbound.
She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators said Kincaid’s BAC was .267.
