Shelby County DA's Office Declares Motel Public Nuisance Following Nearly 800 Disturbance Calls, Including Three Homicides

(Shelby County, TN)—Today, Memphis Extended Stay, a motel located at 4300 American Way was closed after the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office declared it a public nuisance. The closure comes after a thorough investigation by the Memphis Police Department (MPD) revealed a significant number of criminal activities associated with the property, including nearly 800 disturbance calls between August 13, 2022, and September 3, 2024.

Throughout this period, MPD responded to at least three homicides, three "death on arrival" calls, 11 overdoses, and multiple instances of armed robbery and aggravated assault at the hotel. In August 2024, Crime Stoppers tips alerted authorities to the sale of illegal narcotics taking place in several rooms within the establishment, with some reports alleging employee involvement in the illicit activities.

Thanks to the MPD’s diligent investigation, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office was able to present the case before a judge, who ruled the hotel a public nuisance. Several arrests were made during the closure, and a significant quantity of drugs was confiscated. The exact details and amounts of the seized substances will be made available pending completion of forensic testing.

“This closure sends a clear message that we will not tolerate properties that harbor criminal activity and threaten the safety of our community,” said DA Steve Mulroy. “We are committed to working alongside law enforcement to ensure that dangerous establishments are held accountable.”

This is an ongoing investigation.
