Jury Convicts Man of First-Degree Murder
Shelby County, TN – A jury has convicted Calvin Watson of first-degree murder for the May 1, 2020, shooting death of Marquavious Lurks. The verdict follows a three-day trial where the State presented evidence proving Watson’s culpability.
The fatal incident occurred at Jewelry Box & D’va D’vyne on Elvis Presley Boulevard. Officers responding to the scene found Lurks unresponsive inside the establishment. Witnesses reported that Watson had made unwelcome physical and verbal advances toward patrons, leading to a physical altercation.
Surveillance footage revealed that Watson retrieved a weapon from his living quarters before returning to shoot Lurks. Although Watson claimed the victim had pointed a gun at him and ignored verbal commands to drop it, witness testimony and video evidence contradicted his account.
The State called multiple witnesses during the trial, presenting a thorough case that led to Thursday’s guilty verdict.
Chief Prosecutor Carla Taylor and ADA Russell Born handled the trial.
