Since its inception in 2011, the Season of Remembrance has offered families of homicide victims a meaningful way to honor their loved ones during the holidays. Families are encouraged to bring an ornament to commemorate their loved one, which they will hang on a wreath during the ceremony.
This year, the main tree will feature 251 ornaments, representing lives lost in Shelby County. As of November 25, 2024, Shelby County has recorded 287 homicides, including justifiable cases.
Last year’s event welcomed 397 attendees, with 91 ornaments placed on wreaths by family members.
The Season of Remembrance remains a vital tradition in Shelby County, providing a space for healing and reflection while underscoring the community’s commitment to reducing violence and supporting families impacted by tragedy.
“This ceremony serves as a powerful reminder of the lives lost to violence in our community and the lasting impact on their families and loved ones. The Season of Remembrance is not only a time to grieve but also to renew our commitment to justice, healing, and preventing further violence. Together, we honor these victims by working toward a safer Shelby County,” said DA Steve Mulroy.
