Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility Dismisses Senator’s Ethics Complaints Against Shelby County DA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Shelby County, TN – The Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of Tennessee has officially dismissed an ethics complaint filed against Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy by State Senator Brent Taylor. Following a thorough review in accordance with Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9, the Board determined that the complaint lacked merit and has closed the matter with no further action.
As the complaint was reviewed and dismissed by the full Board, there is no right to appeal or request further review, making the decision final. The Board emphasized that the attorney self-discipline system plays a critical role in maintaining the high standards of the legal profession and that attorneys are obligated to submit to disciplinary inquiries as part of their professional duties.
In response to the dismissal, DA Mulroy addressed Sen. Taylor’s repeated ethics complaints, stating:
"Sen. Taylor has spent months publicly discussing the many ethical complaints he’s filed against me, related to my decisions in the Michael Sample and Courtney Anderson cases and alleged improper 'ex parte' communications with a judge. He even hinted that I had received a private reprimand. But what he hasn’t told the public is that the Board of Professional Responsibility has dismissed those complaints."
Mulroy also noted that Sen. Taylor has recently filed yet another complaint, which remains under review.
"Answering these complaints has taken time away from the important work of the District Attorney’s Office, but we remain focused on our mission—making Shelby County safer and ensuring a fair and just legal system for all."
